Perspective on statistical effects in the adhesion of micropatterned surfaces

Bioinspired micropatterned adhesives have attracted extensive research interest in the past two decades. In modeling performance of these adhesives, common assumption has been that adhesive strength each sub-contact is identical. Recent experiments, however, shown interfacial defects different characters lead to a distribution within fibrillar array. Based on experimental observations detachment events, statistical model for local and resulting are presented. This approach constitutes paradigm shift, providing better understanding under real conditions. Examples presented include prediction unstable detachments compliant systems. Future directions discussed, including extension non-uniform loading rate-dependent effects, contribution suction adhesion aging contacts over specific time periods, as well necessity more in-depth defect formation considering surface roughness other imperfections system.
